Recent Update of Flores Island Earth Quakes

As of August 19, 2026, at 5:00 AM WIB, BMKG or Indonesian Meteorology, Geo-Physics Agency recorded that 2,768 aftershocks had occurred. Among these thousands of aftershocks, 24 events had a magnitude above M5.0, and 81 aftershocks were felt by the community.
Furthermore, today on August 20, 2026, at 9:47 AM WIB, a quite significant aftershock shook the region again with a Magnitude of 5.7, centered 39 km northeast of Ruteng, Manggarai, NTT, at a depth of 10 km (with no tsunami potential).

  • Predicted Duration: The BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis stated that aftershocks are expected to continue and will likely end within the next 3 to 4 weeks.

  • Safety Advice: BMKG urges the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to avoid cracked or damaged buildings from the mainshock to prevent structures from collapsing due to the cumulative strain of the aftershocks.
